Q: One visitor asked, "What is the difference between a varnished, laminated and pre finished floor... what is the advantage of varinishing or laminating a floor?"

A: Laminated floors generally are approved for installation in all areas, including below grade since they are more resistant to the effects of dampness that solid hardwood. Depending on the product itself, they can be floated, glued down or nailed. Most, if not all pre finished solid wood floors have a bevel on the edge and/or ends. Finishing on site provides a finish layer over the entire floor surface, including the edges, compared to pre finished wherein each individual board is finished, leaving the greater possibility of spills seeping between the boards.
